In the ancient times, there was once a horrible drought, which caused people to suffer and crops to fail. The Four Dragons – the Black Dragon (air), the Yellow Dragon (earth), the Great Dragon (water), and the Pearl Dragon (fire) – decided to help the people by gathering the waters of the ocean and scattering it through the sky to create rain. The people were relieved of their thirst, but their ruler, the Jade Emperor, was not pleased with the dragons' act. He punished them by ordering the King of the Peaks to separate them and seal them in different mountains.[1]

The nymph Xin Jing, the mistress of courage, couldn't tolerate the Emperor's actions. She decided to transform the mountains using her powers. The dragons were turned into the Yellow River, the Black River, the Great River, and the Pearl River, thus freeing and commemorating the dragons. Doing this, Xin Jing gave up her power and what was left of her became a crystal talisman containing the dragons' essence in addition to her own.[1]
